Spring & Summer Care
As we move into the warmer months, ensuring your sheep have everything they need to stay healthy and productive is essential. Here are the key areas to focus on:
Fresh, Clean Water
Sheep need constant access to fresh, clean water. Warmer weather increases their water intake, so check and refill troughs regularly. Avoid stagnant water sources to prevent disease.
Quality Grazing & Nutrition
Spring and summer provide lush grass but ensure its nutritious and not overgrazed. Rotational grazing helps maintain pasture quality and prevents parasite build-up. In drier months, supplement with hay or silage if grass growth slows.
Additional Feed & Supplements
While good pasture provides much of what sheep need, additional supplementation may be required, especially for ewes and lambs. Consider:
- Mineral supplements to prevent deficiencies in key nutrients like magnesium (to avoid grass staggers).
- Protein-rich feeds if grazing quality declines.
- Salt licks to support overall health.
Adequate Space & Shelter
Sheep need space to roam and graze freely. Avoid overstocking to reduce stress and the risk of disease. Providing shaded areas and natural windbreaks will help keep them comfortable during hot days.
Parasite & Health Management
Warmer months bring a higher risk of parasites such as worms and flies. Responsible worming, fly control, and foot care are essential to keep your flock in top condition. Keep an eye out for signs of flystrike, especially in humid conditions.
By ensuring these essentials, your sheep will thrive through spring and summer, staying healthy, productive, and stress-free.
